Love succulents, but can't seem to keep them alive?

Whether you have a green thumb or not, growing succulents is quite an art ... or rather a matter of the right dosages.

We often tend to water them too much, to put them in too small pots or to leave them without care.

But with a few smart tweaks, you'll be able to enjoy magnificent succulents.

1. You give them too much water

Succulents don't need to be watered as often and as abundantly as green plants. Since succulents are a type of cacti, they don't need a lot of water.

Advice : the soil should be well-drained, soft and moist to the touch, but never saturated with water. No stagnant water at the bottom of the pot either. Our advice is to spray the soil with water with a sprayer once or twice a week at most.

2. The pot is too small

Have you transformed a pretty tea cup into a pot for your succulent plant? It is very pretty, but there is little room for the roots to develop and this will unfortunately end up harming the plant.

Advice : the pot should be twice as deep as the roots of the plant, and about three times as wide. Like that, it gives the plant a lot more space to spread out.

3. The pot has no drainage

Tea cups, glass jars, and other decorative pots are very pretty but not very suitable for succulents that need good drainage. Indeed, the water that does not drain ends up rotting the roots.

Advice : your pot should have several drainage holes through which water can drain. So that the earth does not escape, put a pantyhose or gauze on the bottom of the pot.

4. They are not hot enough

Succulents love hot temperatures. On the other hand, they hate being near an open drafty window or outside in the cold season.

Advice : keep them in a warm place and in the sun. Above all, don't change places once they like it somewhere. Do not have fun taking them out in the summer and bringing them in in the winter, cacti cannot stand this type of change.

5. They are too tight in the pot

When you plant succulents, don't stick them together: they need space!

Advice : the ideal is to leave 5 to 7 cm between each foot so that they do not suffocate. Indeed, as they grow, the cacti will fill the empty space.

6. The soil is too poor

Succulents love nutrient-rich soils, so if your soil isn't rich enough, they won't thrive or eventually die.

Advice : put some compost in the soil when planting or try a ready-made fertilizer in a garden center. Thus, the soil is nutritious enough for succulents to be healthy and grow well.

7. They need repotting

If they like, succulents develop very quickly. If your succulent plant has been in a pot for several months and seems to be growing well, consider repotting it in a larger pot. That way, she won't be cramped and will have more room to grow.

Advice : choose a pot a little larger than the previous one. If the pot is too big, the plant will put all its energy into making roots to fill the space to the detriment of the outer part which will not develop.

Also remember to cut your succulents. It's very easy and you are going to have lots of plants without buying any.
