You Will Really Want To Wash Your Water Bottle After Reading This.

The advantage of gourds is that they are infinitely reusable.

Unlike the plastic bottles you buy in the supermarket.

See our article on the subject here.

You can fill a gourd with whatever you want, as many times as you want.

The problem is that over time it quickly becomes spit!

Bacteria thrive there because they love humid and dark environments.

It is therefore essential to clean your gourd regularly.

It is best to do this after each use if you want it to be flawless.

But a single wash per week is more than enough for the bottle to maintain good hygiene.

To help you develop good habits, here are 5 effective and easy ways to get rid of germs and dirt in your gourd:

1. Put it in the dishwasher

Most aluminum water bottles are dishwasher safe. Just check it on the bottom of your bottle or the brand's website to be sure.

Stainless steel bottles and glass bottles can also be cleaned in the dishwasher without any problem.

For those made of plastic, it is rarer. So double check before you put your water bottle in it. If you are looking for one that is dishwasher safe, this one is perfect.

2. Use hot soapy water

Empty all the liquid remaining in the gourd. Add a few drops of dish soap and hot water to it.

Screw on the cap and shake for 1 or 2 minutes.

You can also use a bottle brush like this, so that you can rub all over the bottle well.

The bottle brush is handy if the bottle has a narrow neck.

Also thoroughly clean the cap and straw (see how here), and let it air dry overnight.

This natural method has the advantage of working with all types of gourds and water bottles.

3. Use white vinegar

This 100% natural cleaner is great for cleaning the whole house, but it's also very effective at killing germs and bacteria that lodge in your gourd.

It could not be easier. Wash with soapy water first, then rinse well.

Then fill your bottle with 1/5 white vinegar and add the rest of the water. Leave on overnight, and in the morning rinse well with clean water.

The only downside to this method is that the white vinegar is not strong enough to kill some viruses like the flu.

4. A (very small) little bleach and baking soda

If you haven't washed your water bottle in months, that's no reason to throw it away!

Even though it smells musty and has mold inside, there is a slightly more potent solution to deep cleaning it.

Nothing can resist a little bleach. But beware, we said a little bit!

Don't worry, there is no health risk from drinking from a gourd that has been cleaned with a solution containing very little bleach.

To do this, dilute 1 teaspoon of bleach and 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 liter of cold water.

Fill your bottle with this mixture, screw on the cap, and leave to act for several hours. Shake well and discard the solution.

Rinse several times with clean water and let dry completely.

Obviously this method is not to be practiced every evening, but rather once every 6 months for example. And no more mold!

5. Effervescent cleaning tablets

Many gourd manufacturers also offer cleaning tablets like these.

But you can also use effervescent tablets to clean dentures like Steradent.

Simply fill the bottle with water, put the tablet in and let it dissolve for 15-30 min (depending on the product's instructions).

Then rinse off and enjoy your clean bottle.

Additional advice

Be careful with liquids you put in gourds, especially plastic ones. They can leave an odor that permeates and becomes difficult to remove.

If you've put in soup for example, and it leaves residue or even pieces, use this cleaning method to help you clean your gourd properly.
