10 market gardening tips for growing peppers

1. Plant your zucchini in a location with direct sunlight (at least 10 hours a day).

2. To promote air circulation, leave a space of about 50 cm between each foot, and a little less for the chili plants.

3. Climb the larger varieties on a stake or trellis, to prevent the stem from breaking due to the wind or the weight of its fruit.

4. Keep the soil moist for good growth of your plants. Make sure they get at least an inch of water per week (or 3.75 liters of water per day in hot weather).

5. Peppers need a soil rich in potting soil that drains easily. Avoid adding too much nitrogen, as too much can lead to strong foliage development, and little or no fruit. The ideal soil pH should be between 6.0 and 6.5.

6. Add a layer of mulch (2-3cm) around your plants, which helps conserve soil moisture and regulate soil temperature.

7. Pinch off the early flowers, which results in a higher yield and larger fruit size.

8. To protect your plants from the moth (a caterpillar also called "cutworm"), put cardboard rolls of toilet paper around each plant, sunk into the ground about an inch deep.

9. To pick the fruit, cut the stem with a sharp knife or pruning shears. If you pull on the pepper to loosen it, you risk damaging the branches of the plant.

10. You can harvest the peppers as soon as they are green and shiny. The longer the pepper stays on the plant, the sweeter it will be (but the yield may be reduced). If you let them ripen on the plant, they will turn yellow, orange, and then red.
