Toxic Substances in 237 Daily Hygiene Products.
Thinking of doing your skin some good by using a face cream, aftershave, toothpaste, shampoo or deodorant?
It is not so !
Did you know that by using these products you risk intoxicating yourself a little more every day?
This is the disturbing conclusion drawn by the Federal Consumers' Union (UFC) - What to choose, after studying 237 commonly used cosmetic products for adults and babies.
Toxic substances found in cosmetic products
The Consumers' Association has compiled a long list of products that we usually use every day, for the toilet. In particular, it highlights the “substances of concern” that compose them.
Whether toxic, allergenic, irritant, endocrine disrupting, they have all been listed in a database. Here is the list of these products dangerous to health.
Result, among the 237 products studied with a magnifying glass, there are 62 products that contain allergens, including methylisothiazolinone (MIT). This product is all the more irritating when it is mixed with products that do not rinse off. It therefore stays on the skin for a long time and its components are more easily absorbed by the skin.
A large number of endocrine disruptors, including 44 in the form of ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, were found in 101 of the 237 products tested.
With its barbaric name, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate is a UV filter with a reputation for disrupting the estrogenic and thyroid functioning.
UFC-Que Chooser journalists are all the more surprised to find this UV filter as it is useless in make-up removal products, toilet waters and hair products ...
Major brands also concerned
Thinking of protecting yourself by spending more money on top brand products? Think again. Big brands are no more concerned about the health of consumers.
Big brands like private labels commonly use these chemicals. As proof, UFC-Que Choisir denounces the presence of long-chain parabens in 3 of the brand's products Rock, 2 products L'Oréal, 2 products Crossroads, 2 Leclerc, and 17 products from other popular brands.
Even the fragile skin of babies is not spared. Babe Cadum, Mixa, Nivea, Pampers do not hesitate to market baby wipes containing a preservative called phenoxyethanol, dangerous for the blood and the liver ...
For UFC-Que Choisir, marketing messages that are meant to be reassuring on the packaging of these products are of no value since there are no binding regulations.
Moreover, denounces the association, the cleansing milk Words from Leclerc's Children, the diaper cream for babies from Corine de Farme or even feminine cleansers Physelia Intimate, all have the famous hypoallergenic label. However, MIT, a preservative which in 2013 received the sad "allergen of the year" award by dermatologists, has been detected in these products.
Be careful !
The solution for UFC-Que Choisir? Finally, adopt protective regulations. Until the government does, consumers need to be very careful with what they buy.

How not to take risks on a daily basis?
In order not to take risks on a daily basis, before buying a product I always look at the ingredient list on the back of the product.
If the list of ingredients make several lines, this is already a bad sign! And if I can't figure out what the ingredients are like for example "methylisothiazolinone", then maybe it's time to put the product back on the shelf ...
In any case, try to compare with organic products which often contain ingredients that are much more understandable by ordinary people. And if the organic product is too expensive, why not try making your own homemade product?
