An easy recipe that everyone will love?
Then this authentic croque-monsieur recipe is made for you!
It was my Parisian grandmother who transmitted to me the real recipe for classic croque-monsieur dating from 1910.
Rest assured, the authentic recipe does not require an electric sandwich maker. All it takes is a simple frying pan!
It's a real treat and it's very easy to do. Look :
Ingredients for 4 persons
- 8 slices of fairly thick sandwich bread
- 120 g of Gruyere, cut into thin, regular strips
- butter
- 4 half-slices of ham
- a knife
How to do
1. Lay out the slices of sandwich bread on the work surface.
2. Use the knife to butter all the slices.
3. Distribute the pieces of Gruyère on 4 of the 8 slices of sandwich bread.
4. Place half a slice of ham on top.
5. Close the sandwiches by putting the buttered slices on top.
6. Melt a little butter in the pan.
7. Put two croque-monsieur in it at the same time.
8. Brown them on one side for two to three minutes.
9. Turn them over and brown them on the other side.
10. Once nicely browned and crispy, remove the sandwiches and keep them warm.
11. Do the same with the other two croque-monsieur.
12. Serve immediately hot.

Additional advice
- Take out the butter in advance to make it easier to spread.
- To return the croque-monsieur in the pan, use a spatula so as not to burn yourself.
- You can also toast your croque-monsieur in the oven, turning them halfway through cooking. Find out how to do it here.
- Some gourmets like to add a layer of béchamel cheese sauce on one of the slices of sandwich bread. Discover the béchamel recipe here.
- Now, there are many variations around the classic croque-monsieur. You can add a fried egg on the croque-monsieur to make a horse-drawn sandwich. In the Hawaiian croque, a pineapple slice is added to the ham and cheese.
- You can also replace the Gruyère with a tasty Bleu d'Auvergne and you get a succulent Auvergne croque.
- Finally, with one or two slices of tomato to complete the ham and cheese garnish, we have a croque-madame!
- You can also prepare your croque-monsieur in a sandwich maker. And to clean it easily, follow this tip.
