How to make homemade shower gel?

If you are trying to cut down on the number of hygiene products you use every day, you might be wondering why not just use a bar of soap?

Well you are right! Soap is sufficient in most cases.

But if you are one of those people who prefers a shower with very thick foam to pamper the skin, then you will love to use this shower gel on your washcloth.

This homemade shower gel recipe is ready in only a few minutes : much faster than making homemade soap.

Thanks to the ingredients that go into its composition, this moisturizing shower gel is so soft that you can also use it on your face. It produces such a thick foam that you can even use it as a shaving cream.

By the way, the last time I went camping with my husband, I used it as a face cleanser, as a shower gel AND as a shaving foam!

It really reduced the size of our toiletry bag and saved us a lot of space in the backpack. Ready for the easy DIY recipe? Here we go ! Look :

The moisturizing properties of this shower gel

List of moisturizing ingredients in this homemade shower gel

Honey : the secret ingredient in this recipe is honey. Perhaps you have already read our article on the benefits of honey for the body. Honey nourishes the skin and makes it more supple, WITHOUT drying it out. In fact, it is the ideal ingredient to fight against skin aging and dry, irritated or damaged skin.

Honey can also speed up the healing time of skin blemishes. Contrary to what one might think, honey does not give a sticky texture to the shower gel. Precisely, the honey will make your gel very smooth and creamy. Just be careful to only use raw, unprocessed honey like this.

Liquid Castile soap: it is thanks to pure liquid Castile soap that your shower gel will produce a very thick foam WITHOUT having to add chemical foaming agents. FYI, Castile soap is available in a scented or unscented version.

If you are using scented Castile soap, no need to add essential oils to your shower gel (unless you want to take advantage of their therapeutic benefits, of course).

Vegetable oils: this shower gel has a particularly moisturizing power thanks to the vegetable oils which are easily absorbed by the skin. Jojoba oil and grape seed oil are my 2 favorite oils. They are so effective that you probably won't need to apply body lotion after your shower.

Vitamin E oil: vitamin E has powerful repairing and moisturizing powers for the skin. It also has anti-oxidant properties and considerably extends the shelf life of homemade beauty and hygiene products. During periods of extreme cold or heat, vitamin E is an ideal ingredient to protect the skin from bad weather and extreme temperatures.

The best essential oils for the skin

Thanks to essential oils, the homemade moisturizing shower gel has moisturizing properties.

Many essential oils are known for their benefits against unpleasant skin disorders. Essential oils can relieve, heal, disinfect, and deodorize the skin.

When making your homemade shower gel, don't forget to adapt it to your skin type and choose a scent that you like.

If you are going to use your shower gel on your baby, it is better not to use essential oils. At most, add only 1-2 drops of chamomile essential oil or lavender essential oil.

If you are going to use your homemade shower gel on your children, halve the amount of essential oil indicated.

My favorite blend right now is 45 drops of lavender essential oil and 15 drops of geranium essential oil. This mixture creates a homemade shower gel with a sweet scent, with floral notes, which reminds me of my grandmother's flower beds in summer.

You can use a single essential oil or create your own perfume by playing with the different fragrances of each plant.

Here are some suggestions for essential oils, and their benefits:

Chamomile essential oil: perfect for dry and sensitive skin. For use against acne, eczema and dermatitis.

Geranium essential oil: ideal for oily skin. For use against acne, skin aging, dermatitis and other skin disorders. Geranium essential oil brightens and revitalizes dull skin.

Grapefruit essential oil: this essential oil firms the skin. It is extremely effective for deep cleansing oily skin. If you do not use more than 15 drops in the mixture, this oil presents no danger of photosensitization.

Lavender essential oil: particularly gentle and beneficial to all skin types, including very sensitive skin. Perfect against aging skin, acne, eczema and psoriasis. Relieves itching of irritated skin.

Palmarosa essential oil: also called Indian geranium, it stimulates cell growth, hydrates the skin and regulates sebum secretions. A must-have essential oil for homemade skin care.

Patchouli essential oil: has antibacterial, astringent, fungicidal and deodorant properties. Excellent against acne, cracks, chapped skin, oily skin and aging skin.

Peppermint essential oil: Because it is particularly potent, use only half or less (25-30 drops at most) of the amounts listed for this recipe. Cools, refreshes and stimulates the skin. Perfect against acne because it has astringent properties.

Note: Avoid any use of peppermint essential oil during the first 4 months of pregnancy. For some people, using peppermint essential oil on sensitive areas of the skin is associated with an unpleasant tingling sensation.

Rosemary essential oil: stimulates and revitalizes the skin. Effective against acne, eczema and dermatitis. Note: to avoid during pregnancy. Do not use if you have epilepsy or high blood pressure.

Sandalwood essential oil: to be used against acne, dry skin, cracks and chapped skin. Also effective in combating wrinkles and aging of the skin.

Sweet orange essential oil: one of the rare citrus-based essential oils that is not photosensitizing. Ideal for dull or oily skin.

Tea tree essential oil: has antibacterial properties. Blends well with oils like lavender or peppermint essential oil. Effective against acne, oily skin, irritated skin and inflammation. But overdose can lead to the opposite effect and to dry the skin. Start by using tea tree essential oil in small doses and increase until you find the ideal amount for your skin type.
