Student Safety: Lmde or Smerep? My Student Councils.

When one arrives in Higher Studies, one has to take care of the student social security.

Lmde, Smerep, mutuals ...

For many, it is a very obscure lexical field ...

Here are some explanations to help you navigate it quickly and find what suits you best:

Which student mutual insurance company to choose?

What is this gibberish?

For students, being affiliated with social security is quite simply obligatory. You must choose one.

It is in fact an insurance that gives you your vital card, and if applicable, reimburse your care up to 70%.

Depending on your health concerns, you can take a Complementary Health in addition. It is, as its name suggests, a supplement that will allow you to be better reimbursed. This is not not mandatory.

Social security registration is done the same time as administrative registration in your school, university, IUT or BTS. You are supposed to receive your vital card before December.

Know that your "assigns" (your spouse, partner, the person who has lived with you for more than 12 months, or your children), can benefit from your social security coverage. Unless these people are students themselves.

Attention, the word "student" concerns all those who are studying. They can be of all ages, if they return to their studies late or if they follow a long course (doctorate for example). So students may very well have rights holders.

If you have an accident during lessons, workshops, or during an agreed internship, you can use your student social security.

Lmde or Smerep, how to choose?

First of all, you should know that there is very little difference between these organizations.

They are both connected to "state" social security, and offer exactly the same benefits, so the rate is the same everywhere.

Whether in my entourage or on the dozens of forums that talk about it, we hear everything and its opposite on these social covers.

"I was there and they never reimbursed me", "they are unpleasant", "never reachable", "I changed and things are going very well" ... Don't let yourself be swayed by these comments.

We are talking about French social security. Yes, there are delays. Yes, they are sometimes unreachable. Yes, we have to fill out a bunch of papers, and yes we have to harass them to take care of us.

Corn this is true everywhere. So don't listen to your friends, personal experiences are mostly wrong.

In fact it's very simple, we have the choice between the Lmde, and a regional mutual linked to Usem. The Smerep is that of Paris.

But depending on your region, you will have the Smeco, the Mgel, the Smeba ... The Lmde, on the other hand, is a national body. This is the main difference.

Regional bodies are, by definition, meant to be closer to students.

For the Smerep for example, you can get reimbursed immediately if you go to one of their centers with your care sheet (Saint Michel, Créteil, Cergy Pontoise, or Orsay).

That said, it must be remembered that the Lmde is national, and therefore it is more appropriate for students who intend to change region, and therefore academy, during their course.

In this case, with the Lmde, you will not have to redo your vital card. You will save time by not having to repeat these long and boring administrative procedures.

How much does it cost

It all depends on your age and the profession of your parents. Already, if you are a scholarship holder, you will not have to pay anything, whatever your age.

- If you have under 20 on September 30 (start of the school year) you have nothing to pay. Your social coverage will change over to that of your parents.

- On the other hand, if you are 20 years old, you will have to pay 200 € annual membership fee. Unless one of your parents is part of the merchant navy, works at the national theater of the opera, of the French comedy, at the national assembly, or at the SNCF. In these cases, it's free for you.

- Between 21 and 28 years old, you will have to pay these 200 €, unless one of your parents is at the SNCF (again!).

- From 28 years old you do not have no longer the right student social security. But you can request an exemption if you are a doctoral student, preparing your medical thesis, or interrupting your studies due to maternity, illness, service to the nation (the class!).
