By the way, what exactly is poop?

Our faeces are mainly composed of undigested food, proteins, bacteria, salts and substances produced and released by the intestines.

Stools can vary in size, shape, and smell, but there are some things that indicate good (or bad) health.

What does healthy poop look like?

Pile of poop emoji cupcakes.

First of all, be aware that the appearance of healthy poop can vary from person to person!

To take a closer look at your production and learn more about your health, here is the basics of poo: its color, shape, size and texture.

His color

Do you know the poo emoji, the one that represents a pile of feces?

Well, know that this symbol hit the nail on the head on one of the most important characteristics of a healthy poop!

In a healthy person, the stool has a brownish color - neither too light nor too dark.

It is bilirubin, a reddish pigment produced by the body when red blood cells break down, that gives turds this brown tint.

Its shape

It is inside the winding walls of the intestines that stools are formed.

Therefore, a perfect poo has a streamlined and elongated shape, like a smooth sausage.

But as you'll see below, stool can come in different forms, depending on how long it has been in the colon.

So if your droppings are NOT the elongated sausage shape, your poop is telling you something's wrong!

Her size

What is the normal size of a poo? 5 cm

If all goes well, your poo doesn't come out in small pieces (we cover this topic below).

Ideally, the stool is about 5cm in length and are easy to evacuate.

Its texture

Healthy poop is neither too soft nor too firm, while keeping a compact shape that does not fall apart.

If it is too dry or too runny, it indicates digestive problems or a fiber deficiency.

The time needed to do your business

How long do you need to do your business? 1 to 15 minutes

When a person spends too much time in the bathroom, it is often assumed that they have to do the big errand.

However, know that a healthy poop is easy to evacuate, and does not take no more than 1 min to expel.

However, some people tend to take a little longer to relieve themselves.

Thus, as a general rule, a normal poop does not take no more than 10 to 15 min.

If you take more time, there is a little problem with constipation. In this case, I recommend this effective and natural remedy.

The 7 types of poop on the Bristol scale

The 7 types of poo according to the Bristol scale.

This visual scale is based on a study by the University of Bristol on the different shapes and textures of stool in more than 2,000 people.

The Bristol Scale divides saddles into 7 types.

It’s from afar the easiest and most efficient tool to help you understand what your poop is saying about your health.

Type 1: balls

Description: small, hard, loose droppings, nut-like and difficult to flush

Meaning : this type of stool usually indicates constipation. It is uncommon in people who have normal bowel movements.

Type 2: the caterpillar

Description: same shape as type 1, but the small balls of poop are aggregated as a sausage.

Meaning : also indicates constipation. Again, this guy is unusual.

Type 3: sausage

Description: sausage-shaped with small cracks on the surface.

Meaning : the ideal turd! This is the goal to achieve, provided it is a bit soft and easy to kick out.

Type 4: the snake

Description: smooth and sausage or snake shaped, and easy to expel.

Meaning : according to the doctors, it is also healthy and normal poop. It should occur every 1 to 3 days.

Type 5: amoeba

Description: the stool comes out in small pieces, as with type 1, but very soft and easy to expel. They are irregularly shaped with well defined contours.

Meaning : indicates that you are not eating enough fiber. It's time to eat more grains and vegetables.

Type 6: the McFlurry

Description: small sparkling pieces with irregular contours.

Meaning : excessively soft texture is a sign of moderate diarrhea. To restore normal transit, drink more water and fruit juice.

Type 7: the Jackson Pollock

Description: the stools are completely watery and without any solid lumps.

Meaning : it's diarrhea. In other words, the bowel movement is too fast, and the intestines cannot process food into healthy, normal poop.

What does the color of your poop mean?

What does the color of your poop mean?

As with size and texture, the different colors of your stool can also tell you about your health.

And as mentioned above, normal stool coloris brown, in all its nuances.

Be aware that stool color can also turn green in healthy people, according to medical experts.

On the other hand, if the color of your poo tends towards white, black, red, yellow-orange or one of the other colors of the rainbow, then it is better to go see a doctor.

Black

Black stools can be the result of certain medications or treatment for iron deficiency, but also of excessive consumption of licorice.

If not, black stools indicate a presence of blood in the digestive tract.

But then, why this black color if the blood is red? Upstream, the blood has been partly digested by the intestinal flora, which produces very black stools.

Green

As mentioned earlier, stools that are slightly greenish are quite normal.

But if your stools veer completely in green, there are 2 possible explanations:

- either you have eaten a lot of green foods, such as spinach,

- or your green stools are a sign of too rapid transit, because of gastroenteritis or diarrhea, for example.

When bilirubin does not have time to be broken down by the intestinal flora, it contains more bile salts, which gives it a greenish color.

Whitish

A whitish stool is usually a sign of a defect in the flow of bile in the intestine.

Bile is a greenish-yellow digestive fluid secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder.

So, if your stool is a whitish color, it probably means that your bile ducts are blocked.

Whitish stools are also a side effect of some medications, especially anti-diarrhea. In any case, it is better to consult a doctor.

Red

As you have probably guessed, red stools are potentially a sign of bleeding, either from the digestive tract or from hemorrhoids.

But before you panic because your stools are red, think about what you ate first!

Indeed, certain foods can change the color of the stools to red: this is particularly the case of beets, cranberries, tomato juice or red gelatin.

Yellow or orange

The stools may also be yellow-orange, with a particularly foul odor and a greasy appearance.

This is often due to poor digestion of fat and may indicate a nutrient malabsorption disorder, such as celiac disease (gluten intolerance).

Should the poo float or sink?

Normally, in a healthy person, stool should flow.

But sometimes, looking in the toilet bowl, it happens that we notice a floating stool, like a duckling in a bathtub.

If your poop is floating, don't worry, it's usually not serious.

It just means that some of your stools are less dense than others which tend to sink like the Titanic!

In a study of floating stools, researchers have found that this lack of density indicates excess gas or water in the feces.

Another possible explanation behind the mystery of floating poo is poor nutrient absorption.

If so, it probably indicates one of the abnormalities mentioned above, such as moderate constipation.

How often should you poop?

How often should you poop? Width

There are many who think know what constipation is.

But according to medical experts, you can't talk about constipation just when you have a bowel movement. less than 3 times a week.

If you do not have a bowel movement, there are several possible explanations.

For example, it may be due to a disorder of the nerves that regulate the intestines, colon and rectum.

Similarly, disorders of the pelvic floor muscles (the perineum) can also slow down your bowel movement.

Constipation is also a common annoyance in pregnancy, diabetes, and many hormonal diseases.

So what if you feel a blockage or have trouble having a bowel movement?

To fight constipation, consider increasing your consumption of foods high in fiber: for example, raw vegetables, pulses, fruits (the famous prunes!) And whole grains.

Also, remember to drink plenty of water, exercise, and reduce your stress levels.
