My Homemade Toothpaste Recipe For Healthier, Whiter Teeth.

A few years ago, I started to take an interest in the ingredients of commercial toothpastes.

I was also interested in the general approach of modern dental care.

Everyone agrees: modern dentistry is competent and beneficial.

On the other hand, it has the same problem as Western medicine: it is focus on processing and no on prevention.

Classic toothpaste problems: how to prevent cavities

I think the goal of dental hygiene should be the prevention of cavities and diseases through a healthy diet and lifestyle.

It starts in pregnancy, when the jaws and teeth are forming. But also during breastfeeding and throughout the rest of life.

But avoiding cavities and tooth problems is not easy these days, especially with the development of junk food.

Why is enamel remineralization important?

When a dentist finds cavities, the solution 100% of the time is to have a filling.

What if there is another solution? What if we could remineralize our teeth through healthy eating and proper oral hygiene?

I think it is something that is possible to do.

As soon as a dentist uses a burr and puts on a filling, your teeth weaken. As a result, they are even more exposed to cavities.

But if we focused more on prevention instead of treatment, the vast majority of cavities could be avoided.

In addition, it would prevent damage to the teeth from the fillings.

When I was a child, the majority of my teeth knew the dentist's burr and they were sealed.

This is something I would like to avoid for my children. I would like their teeth to stay healthy.

This is why I am very interested in the prevention of cavities and the remineralization of teeth.

The goal is that my children can have healthy teeth, and that this also contributes to their general good health.

Be aware that there are several factors that contribute to the remineralization of teeth, including:

- a healthy diet

- the pH balance of saliva

- good oral hygiene

Diet and the pH balance of saliva are related and quite complex factors to understand.

I strongly encourage you to do your own research on the relationship between diet and the health of your teeth.

I also hope that you will take a closer look at your oral hygiene.

Because don't forget that what I am sharing here in this article are conclusions based on my own research: I am not a dentist!

Classic toothpaste: the problematic ingredients

What are the dangerous toothpaste ingredients

Toothpastes clean teeth and remove plaque. This is of course beneficial for the hygiene of your teeth.

But be aware that if your goal is to have healthy teeth through a healthy diet, using an industrial toothpaste can play tricks on you.

In addition, toothpastes from top brands contain questionable products - products that can do more harm than good:

Glycerin

This ingredient is not bad for health in itself, if its origin is certified.

On the other hand, its effects on the health of the teeth are questionable.

Indeed, it seems that glycerin deposits a thin film on the teeth which prevents remineralization.

This ingredient can also be harmful if it has been packaged with dangerous chemicals.

And we can be sure that most toothpastes use the cheapest glycerin ...

Sodium lauryl sulfate (LSS)

LSS is used for its thickening effects and ability to create a lather. But it is also known to be carcinogenic.

Several organic companies maintain that the use of LSS is safe: but I must admit that I still prefer to be careful with this ingredient.

Saccharin

This is the first ingredient for which I have expressed serious doubts. Why ?

Because I carefully avoid all sweeteners: most are known to be carcinogenic.

In addition, saccharin-type sweeteners contribute to obesity and many other health problems.

Sweeteners are also known to be excitotoxins - that is, they stimulate neurons in the brain until they die.

And despite this, manufacturers continue to use saccharin in toothpaste ...

Fluorine

It's hard to question the ingredients in toothpaste let alone fluoride.

Of course, I don't pretend to be an expert on fluoride.

But from what I understand, the type of fluoride used by toothpaste makers is extremely toxic.

This is perhaps why this form of fluoride is not found in nature?

If your goal is to remineralize your tooth enamel, fluoride is not a recommended product.

In fact, like glycerin, fluoride works by depositing a thin film to supposedly "protect" your teeth.

In addition, it seems that this layer is so thin that it is anyway useless to protect the teeth from cavities.

The SAFE alternative

Homemade Safe Toothpaste Recipe

If you are looking for a healthy alternative to store-bought toothpaste, there are several.

For example, you can buy toothpaste made from natural products. But beware: they are rather expensive and still contain questionable ingredients.

Ever since I realized how great he is easy to make homemade toothpaste and that it allows me to not to spend a fortune in branded toothpaste, I started to test different alternatives.

The simplest alternative is the powder toothpaste.

Just use baking soda and add a little salt for a gentle, slightly abrasive clean.

You can also use a mineral powder of calcium or magnesium. I use the Natural Calm brand.

Many people add hydrogen peroxide to the powder before brushing their teeth.

Personally, I don't add any because I already use hydrogen peroxide for my mouthwashes.

tips for making your own natural toothpaste at home coconut oil, essential oils, baking soda

Then I started to add coconut oil to my recipe to give a texture to the dough and take advantage of its antibacterial properties.

I also added essential oils to flavor the paste.

For a long time, the ingredients of my homemade toothpaste were: coconut oil, baking soda, 1 pinch of salt and essential oil.

The only problem with this recipe was the salty taste of the baking soda and salt. My kids didn't really like ...

This is why I started using the xylitol to balance the salty taste. Xylitol is a sugar substitute, extracted from the bark of birch trees.

Xylitol is a product that I discovered recently. But according to my research, it can be used without danger and its preventive properties against cavities are interesting.

In addition, I also started to add a few drops of trace elements to my toothpaste.

Ingredients of my homemade toothpaste

- 2 tablespoons of organic coconut oil

- 2 tablespoons of baking soda

- 2 tablespoons of powdered magnesium citrate

- 2 tablespoons of powdered xylitol or green stevia

- 2 tablespoons of sea salt

- 20 drops of essential oils (peppermint is ideal)

- 10 drops of trace elements

Results

There you go, using this homemade toothpaste and dental floss, your teeth are clean and healthy :-)

In addition to a healthy diet rich in minerals (essential for the health of your teeth), your teeth will be healthier and whiter.

From what I understand, having yellow teeth can be a result of enamel demineralization.

Why ? Because if the enamel layer decreases, dentin (commonly called ivory) begins to appear through. However, the color of the dentin tends towards yellow.

By strengthening your email through remineralization, your teeth are not only protected from cavities, but they naturally become whiter and less prone to cavities.

Your turn...
