One Measure To Take, No Meter At Hand: Use Your Finger!
You don't always walk around with a ruler in your pocket: yet there are situations where you really need it!
Will this piece of furniture found in a flea market fit into the small corner of our living room? Is this piece of fabric large enough for the hall closet?
In short, we don't always have a ruler on us just when we need it. But we have fingers, don't we? So here's my tip, borrowed from a building professional who uses it very often.
The finger as a standard measure
The pro in question uses his index finger, because he says it is the most practical, but you have the right to choose the finger that you like!
1. At your house, measure your index finger with a ruler: mine is 7 cm. We don't need to be too precise, it's just an indication of the length, to within 4 or 5 mm.
2. Memorize this length, or write it down somewhere if you are afraid to forget.
3. When you need to measure an object, you just have to use your finger while putting it down as many times as possible along the length of the object in question, and making a simple calculation (multiply the length of your finger by the number of times you put it ...) you will get an approximate measurement!
Example : I can put my index finger 5 times over the length of this shelf. 7 X 5 = 35. It therefore measures approximately 35 cm. Battery to cover the radiator in my room!
