The 7 Mistakes To Avoid To Succeed Your Square Vegetable From The First Time!

ERROR # 1: the bins are too wide

One of the most common mistakes with raised beds is that the boxes are too wide.

The width of a vegetable patch is generally 1.20 m. But in some cases it has to be even narrower than that.

Indeed, the important thing is to be able to do your gardening, without having to walk on earth.

So, if you place your vegetable patch next to a fence, I advise you not to exceed a width of 75 cm.

ERROR N °2: lWatering was not planned in advance

Do not forget to provide a faucet nearby before installing your raised vegetable garden.

Are you planning to hand water your vegetable garden with a watering can? Know that it can quickly become tiring!

So make sure to install your vegetable patches near a faucet.

It does not matter which watering method you choose: with a watering can, a garden hose or a drip system.

Indeed, having water easily accessible will help you save a lot of time and avoid unnecessary efforts.

To easily water your garden, you can use a cheap microporous hose, like this one.

And here is a drip watering kit like the one I use in my garden which is definitely the most effective method.

ERROR N °3: the selected materials are hazardous to health

Use hardwood not chemically treated to avoid any risk of contamination of the cultivated soil.

The materials used to make your vegetable garden in squares must be chosen with care, especially for wood.

As a general rule, do not use pressure treated lumber manufactured before 2003.

It is advisable to use hardwood not chemically treated to avoid any risk of contamination of the cultivated soil.

Also, avoid using old railway ties (which have been treated with creosote, a harmful product).

Likewise, do your research before using old tires in your garden, because they are still plastic ...

ERROR N °4 : the soil used in the containers is not suitable

Use the right mixture of soil and compost to fill your raised vegetable garden.

Most soil mixes can be used in garden beds, but some are not recommended.

Potting soil, for example, is not recommended for filling a raised vegetable patch because it drains water too quickly.

Another mistake novice gardeners make is to fill their vegetable gardens with composted manure, which is too high in nitrogen.

If so, your plants will grow normally, but they will produce very little fruit and vegetables.

In my experience, I have always had good results using a simple mixture of garden soil and an organic material like compost.

The proportions vary depending on the quality of the soil you have in your garden and your budget.

As a general rule of thumb, the ideal ratio is 1/4 of compost to 3/4 of soil, as shown here.

ERROR N °5 : the bins are too close together

Leave a space of at least 60 to 90 cm between the containers of your raised vegetable garden.

Remember that to garden comfortably, you need enough room to work between your kitchen patches.

It is therefore preferable to provide a space of at least 60 to 90 cm.

I made this mistake myself when I installed my first vegetable patch.

Look at me in the photo above with my brand new vegetable patch.

I have a big smile ... but I was soon going to learn how complicated it is to garden between the tubs during the period of plant growth!

Indeed, I had left only 30 cm of space between the bins ...

Believe my experience, there is really too little space when it comes to weeding, planting or harvesting.

ERROR # 6 : the aisles are overgrown with weeds

To keep weeds from growing, line your walkways with pieces of cardboard and a thin layer of mulch.

If there's one thing I hate, it's weeding the paths between the tubs in my vegetable patch.

Instead, consider running your lawn mower over driveways where weeds grow.

There is another super effective method of preventing weeds from growing.

Just cover your walkways with pieces of cardboard and a thin layer of mulch - it works GREAT!

In my garden, I prefer to use organic mulch.

To line the aisles between my bins, I use pine needles, as they decompose more slowly than other materials.

ERROR # 7 : the soil in the vegetable patch has not been mulched

Mulching the soil from raised beds, helps to significantly reduce weeding time.

One of the advantages of square vegetable gardens is that they are usually much less invaded by weeds.

But that doesn't mean there isn't no risk of weed invasion ...

The solution ? Mulch the soil inside the vegetable patches, which will greatly reduce the weeding time.

But that's not all, because mulching your raised vegetable garden has other advantages ...

Mulching also helps regulate soil temperature and keep the soil moist.
