Yet in time, the perfume was made from the distillation of flowers (which is also always the case for essential oils) without chemicals or added ingredients.
It was authentic, real and natural scent. Today the composition of perfumes is far from natural. Look :
What do store-bought perfumes contain?
According to this article from the American site Scientific American, perfumes contain products derived from petroleum or natural gas as well as many other dangerous synthetic chemicals.
Take for example, one of my old favorite perfumes - "J'Adore" by Christian Dior. The EWG gives it a score of 7 out of 10 for its toxicity, with moderate cancer risks and high risks of endocrine disruption (which causes breast cancer, thyroid or hormone imbalance). Yikes, it's really not nice!
And it's the same for most perfumes in the store. They all contain dozens of chemicals, each more secret than the next, that are not listed on the labels.
I have also learned that cheap perfumes are also harmful. Some of the chemicals used circulate in fatty tissue and breast milk ... Not great for babies!
For me the scariest thing is that companies bornare not required to disclose all ingredients in their perfumes to protect their trade secrets!
Thus, consumers cannot know exactly what they are putting on their skin ...
How to make your own homemade perfume easily?
So, let's get to the fun part: the recipe for making your homemade perfume! Because it's still great to create your own perfume, isn't it?
We are going to use organic essential oils, like the natural recipe for natural home deodorant that you loved on our site.
What you need
- pure vodka at 50 °. You can also use jojoba oil instead
- essential oils (preferably organic)
- a glass spray bottle (essential oils attack plastic)
- distilled water
- a dropper with pipette
- a notebook to write down your compositions (percentages, number of drops, etc.). Useful to renew or modify one of your creations.
Note: choose vodka at 50 ° preferably because it completely dissolves essential oils. If you only find 40 ° vodka, that's okay. Just shake the perfume bottle well before each use to mix the ingredients. If you are using jojoba oil, you will also have to shake the bottle before each use.
Which essential oils to choose?
It really is according to the tastes of each person. In addition, depending on how your skin reacts, the same oil can smell differently from one person to another.
You may have to experiment with various mixtures to find the one you like the most.
The composition of the scents
To make your perfume properly, you need 3 different notes : the top note, the heart note and the base note.
- Essential oils "base notes"fix and prolong the duration of other aromas. They ensure that the fragrance stays on the skin.
- Essential oils "heart notes"determine the dominant character of the perfume. They belong, according to your desires, to the family of floral, spicy or woody aromas.
- Essential oils "top notes"are the ones that give the first impression when you open the bottle.
A perfume can have many essential oils. To start, start by composing a simpler fragrance by combining only 3 essential oils.
How to do
Count 24 drops for 15 ml of vodka (about 1 tbsp).
1. Add 15 ml of vodka to the bottle.
2. Add 8 drops of a base note essential oil.
3. Add 8 drops of a heart note essential oil.
4. Add 8 drops of a top note essential oil.
5. Let your perfume sit for a few days in the refrigerator so as to fix the odors.

Here are 3 pairing ideas for harmonious scents. I use these easy-to-make perfumes on a daily basis and love them:
- Fruity scent: sandalwood, orange and ylang-ylang.
- Good mood scent: cedar wood, petit grain bigarade and grapefruit.
- Gourmet and spicy fragrance: cloves, vanilla and orange.
How to create your unique perfume?
Do you want to try other scents? So it's very simple.
As indicated previously, all you have to do is choose an essential oil in each of the 3 notes (top, heart and base notes) and respect the previous dosages, namely 24 drops for 15 ml of vodka.

Precautions to take
I have never put a classic perfume directly on the skin. Always on my clothes. And considering the chemicals they contain, I think I did well!
Now know that essential oils are powerful and should be used sparingly. To be sure you don't have an allergy, try testing the scent on the top of your hand.
As with classic perfumes, I prefer not to put my essential oil perfumes directly on the skin.
