10 uses of wood ash you never thought of.

During the winter, a roaring fire is one of the best ways to keep warm.

But once the wood has burned, you end up with kilos of ash that you don't know what to do with.

Fortunately, wood ash is not just good to be thrown in the trash.

It is very useful for the vegetable garden and for growing tomatoes, for washing laundry, for enriching compost, for keeping slugs away ... and many other uses for the home or the garden.

If you don't know what to do with ash, here are 10 very useful uses for wood ash.

Discover the uses of wood ash

1. Remove bad odors from animals

Does your dog smell bad? A handful of wood ash on its coat neutralizes stubborn odors.

2. Remove stains from cement pavers

Splashes of fresh paint on cement can be absorbed by ash. To do this, put wood ash on it and rub with a broom or your shoe.

3. Enrich the compost

Before adding the compost to the soil, you can increase its nutrients by sprinkling a little wood ash on top. Do not add too much, otherwise you risk spoiling the mixture.

4. Scare away slugs and snails

Sprinkle all around your vegetable garden like a sanitary cordon, the ashes effectively repel slugs and snails.

5. Melt the ice on the ground

Instead of using road salt which ruins concrete and soil, use wood ash to melt the ice.

6. Controlling the growth of algae in a pond

A simple tablespoon for 4000 liters of water adds enough potassium to strengthen other aquatic plants that compete with algae. As a result, it slows the growth of algae in the pond.

7. Boost tomato growth

Some plants love calcium, put 4 tablespoons in the hole before you plant your tomatoes.

8. Clean the windows of a fireplace insert

A damp sponge dipped in ash makes it easy to clean soot residue from the fireplace panes.

9. Make soap

Wood ashes soaked in water turn into lye. Adding animal fat and then boiling it all produces soap. Salt is then needed to harden the soap when it cools.

10. Make silverware shine

A paste of ash and water is the natural, non-toxic solution for polishing metal and making silverware shine.

There you go, you now know what to do with the wood ash :-)

In any case, remember to keep the ashes in a metal bucket with a lid so as not to take unnecessary risks.
