Want to make sticky rice but don't have a rice cooker?

No problem !

To make sticky or sticky rice at home without a rice cooker, I have two foolproof methods.

The result is rice that is just as delicious as if it had been made with a rice cooker.

But before going into the details of the cooking, you must choose your rice well so as not to make a mistake with the variety.

Which rice to buy?

Basmati rice or Thai rice sold in supermarkets (in France) are not sticky rice.

You have to go to specialized markets. This type of rice, of Asian, Chinese or Japanese origin, is more opaque than the others.

How to prepare it?

The basic trick to not miss your sticky rice, or glutinous rice, is to rinse it well with cold water, until this rinse water becomes translucent.

The goal is to get rid of excess starch. This improves the taste qualities of your rice.

Once clean, you should put the rice to soak in a good volume of water for at least an hour, or even overnight if possible.

How to do

Now let's start cooking it!

1. The first technique The basic cooking method is to use a steamer pan.

Put water in the saucepan and place over the steamer section.

The trick to having good rice is to place a tea towel in the upper part "steam" and put the rice in the tea towel.

Extend the tea towel and cover with the lid.

Leave to cook for 20 minutes and your rice will be perfectly sticky. To be sure, check the appearance of your rice which should be translucent and, of course, glued.

2. The other method is to use a microwave oven.

For that you need imperatively soak the rice about ten minutes in hot water.

I have already tried the microwave method by skipping this step and the result was really not good: uncooked rice, edible limit.

The water level should be a little above the rice level.

Then place the bowl (ceramic, plastic tends to melt) in the microwave for about 3 min.

Take out, stir and repeat until all the grains are translucent.

Savings made

With these two tips, you won't have to buy an electric steamer also known as a "rice-cooker".

The price of such a kitchen utensil fluctuates between 30 and 70 €.
